Why Does the Positive Grassmannian Show Up Everywhere? | PODCAST: The Joy of Why

The Signal
Lauren Williams, a Harvard algebraic combinatorist, argues that mathematical beauty acts as a practical heuristic: if a result is inelegant, the question islikely flawed. The central tension lies in whether this aesthetic preference will survive if AI becomes a primary mathematical partner, and whether understanding remains essential or if computation-only results suffice for scientific progress.
The Case
- Williams’s grad-school research found combinatorial formulas on the positive Grassmannian—a structure used to catalog linear subspaces—that unexpectedly computed probabilities for protein synthesis and traffic flow.
- This Grassmannian structure reappears in the study of shallow-water waves and scattering amplitudes, where positivity constraints prevent mathematical models from blowing up toward infinity.
- Williams and her collaborators launched 'First Proof,' a benchmarking project designed to test AI proof-generation capabilities by using unpublished research lemmas and encrypted solutions to prevent internet memorization.
- In private one-shot tests, AI models solved only 2 of 10 problems, illustrating that while models are currently limited, their role as research partners remains an open, unsettled question.
- The hosts and Williams debate a core philosophical divide: whether scientific progress requires deep human understanding or if prediction-heavy computation is sufficient for the field to advance.
The 1 Minute Signal Take
The episode provides a clear, high-level map of how abstract geometry informs real-world models, though it is thin on the technical mechanism explaining why these specific domains correlate. I suggest watching this only if you want to understand the current 'benchmarking' philosophy for AI in research, as the philosophical debate about mathematical beauty is explored more deeply here than in most technical commentary.
